What is the difference between paper and airlaid napkin?

  • Paper Napkin:

    • Texture: Traditional paper napkins have a smooth, sometimes slightly rough texture depending on the quality and type of paper used.
    • Feel: They are generally less soft and more prone to tearing compared to airlaid napkins.
    • Absorbency: Moderate absorbency, suitable for light spills and wiping hands.
    • Durability: Can tear easily when wet and are generally single-use.
    • Common Uses: Everyday household use, casual dining, picnics, fast food restaurants, and parties.
    • Specialty Uses: Often used where cost-effectiveness and disposability are priorities.
    • Wet-Laid Process: Traditional paper napkins are made using the wet-laid process, where cellulose fibers are suspended in water, then drained, pressed, and dried to form the paper sheet.
    • Materials: Typically made from wood pulp or recycled paper materials.
  • Airlaid Napkin:
    • Texture: Airlaid napkins have a fabric-like texture, making them much softer and thicker.
    • Feel: They feel more like cloth napkins and are more absorbent and durable.
    • Absorbency: High absorbency due to the open fiber structure, making them suitable for heavier spills and multiple uses.
    • Durability: More durable and resistant to tearing even when wet, often allowing for multiple uses within a single meal.
    • Common Uses: Upscale dining, weddings, banquets, and other formal events where a premium look and feel are desired.
    • Specialty Uses: In settings where a more luxurious, cloth-like experience is preferred without the need for laundering.
    • Airlaid Process: Airlaid napkins are produced using air instead of water to disperse the cellulose fibers. This process involves air jetting the fibers onto a moving belt, where they are bonded with a latex binder or other adhesive agents.
    • Materials: Often made from high-quality pulp, sometimes blended with other fibers for added softness and strength.

Some may ask what about quilted and airlaid napkin?

- Quilted napkins are made by layering and embossing paper, while airlaid napkins are made using a shredded fiber process and bonded together using heat and pressure.

- Quilted napkins are plush and cushioned, while airlaid napkins have a cloth-like texture and are highly absorbent.

And you may be wondering what is the difference between napkins and facial tissue?

- A napkin is more often used to wipe your mouth and hands during meals whereas a facial tissue is used to wipe your nose, eyes, and any part of your face including your mouth.

- Textures are slightly different but both are commonly used during or after meals!
